What bioremediation is and why it works in a port
It is not a product that covers the slick, nor a detergent that disperses it. It is a biological process in which microorganisms feed on the hydrocarbon until it no longer exists.
The mechanism, no mystery
A hydrocarbon — diesel, petrol, oil — is a chain of carbon and hydrogen. For certain microorganisms that chain is not a poison: it is food. They use it as a carbon source, break it down through their metabolism and release what is left over, which is carbon dioxide and water.
That is what changes everything compared with traditional methods: there is nothing to collect afterwards. The pollutant is not moved elsewhere, nor turned into waste someone has to manage. It disappears because it has been consumed.
Three conditions for it to happen
- Suitable, living microorganisms. They must be strains capable of degrading hydrocarbons, and they must be active rather than dormant.
- Physical contact with the hydrocarbon. Degradation starts where the mixture touches the slick. If it does not reach it, nothing happens.
- Time. It is not instant. Under normal conditions the process completes in one to two days.
Why it fits a port particularly well
A port does not have an occasional spill problem: it has a constant drip. Boats release hydrocarbons at the fuel dock and through automatic bilge pumps, every single day. Wind and current concentrate that oil film in the same corners, which end up being the black zones everyone knows about.
Against a constant flow, a method that generates no waste is structurally easier to live with: you do not stockpile used absorbents or multiply your waste management every week. And because the application is liquid, it reaches surfaces mechanical equipment cannot enter: breakwaters, pontoon corners, gaps between piles and the dock walls themselves.
What it is not
It is not a dispersant. A dispersant breaks the slick into droplets and spreads it through the water column: it stops being visible, but the hydrocarbon is still there. It is not a detergent or an absorbent. And it is not an untested new technology: it has been applied in Spanish pollution episodes for three decades.
